Insulin (Hypoglycemia) Test

The secretion of acid is stimulated by hypoglycemia induced by insulin administration as a result of stimulation of vagus nerve.

These medical examination is performed to isolate the efficiency of vagotomy. The main stimulus are send through vagus nerve and this stimulation can therefore be removed by vagotomy.

Sample of gastric juice are taken and titrated in the same procedure describe for the pentagastrin test.

Sample for the investigation of blood glucose are collected upon completion of the basal secretion study at 30, 60 and 90 minutes after insulin injection, and analysed for glucose estimation.

The test is reserved to patients with recurrent ulceration after vagotomy, which ma be incomplete. A successful vagotomy show no rise in acidity after a sufficient dose of insulin.
